Our ECMO Care

Depending on a childs needs, we may use one of two ECMO treatments:</p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li><strong>Venoarterial (VA) ECMO.</strong> This is when both the heart and lungs need to rest. This type of ECMO pumps blood and breathes for a child.</li>\r\n<li><strong>Venovenous (VV) ECMO.</strong> This is when the heart is working, but the lungs need time to rest. This type of ECMO doesnt pump blood.</li>\r\n</ul>\r\n<p>Our ECMO care team members may include:</p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li><strong>Attending physician/surgeon</strong> the doctor in charge of your childs care</li>\r\n<li><strong>ECMO coordinator</strong> the manager of the ECMO department who acts as an extra resource for the care team</li>\r\n<li><strong>ECMO physician</strong> a doctor who specializes in ECMO treatment</li>\r\n<li><strong>ECMO specialist</strong> a nurse, respiratory therapist or perfusionist whos specially trained to monitor the machine</li>\r\n<li><strong>Perfusionist&nbsp;</strong> a specialist with advanced training in heart-lung machines and ECMO</li>\r\n<li><strong>Respiratory therapist</strong> a specialist in ventilators (breathing machines) and lung care</li>\r\n<li><strong>Nurse</strong> a pediatric nurse who cares for your child in the hospital</li>\r\n<li><strong>Nurse practitioner</strong> a nurse with advanced training and education who provides care under the guidance of the attending physician/surgeon</li>\r\n<li><strong>Social worker</strong> a professional who helps families cope</li>\r\n</ul>\r\n"}} id=text-7ed4ab5568 class=cmp-text>
